Why the Mrembo Project Exists
At Watoto Unity Foundation, the Mrembo Project was created with one purpose at heart: to uplift, protect, and empower young girls so they can grow with confidence, dignity, and equal opportunity.
Every day, girls in our communities face challenges that can easily stand in the way of their education and personal development, limited access to menstrual hygiene products, a lack of accurate health information, early school dropout, low self-esteem, and cultural pressures that silence their potential. The Mrembo Project exists to change that story.
Through school-based sessions like the one pictured above where one of our dedicated staff members is facilitating a workshop in a government secondary school, we provide safe spaces for young girls to learn, ask questions, and express themselves freely. We are deeply grateful to the government for consistently opening doors and welcoming this important work into their schools.
Our Mission Through Mrembo
The project is built on three pillars:
1. Education and Awareness
We equip girls with accurate knowledge about menstrual health, hygiene, puberty, and their rights topics often considered taboo.
2. Confidence and Self-Esteem Building
We want every girl to recognize her worth and believe in her ability to shape her future.
3. Access to Essential Resources
Where needed, we support girls with reusable sanitary pads and other basic items so that menstruation never becomes a barrier to education.
Why It Matters
When a girl understands her body, feels supported, and stays in school, everything changes not only for her, but for her family, her community, and generations to come. She becomes a confident young woman who can dream, lead, and contribute fully to society.
That is why the Mrembo Project exists.
That is why we show up.
And that is why we will continue strengthening this work with passion and purpose.
